PERFORMANCE AND TROUBLESHOOTING
Before the first time you use the program after running
SETUP, be sure to reboot your computer. In the event of
a program failure, simply quit and restart the presentation
or at worst quit Windows and reboot your computer.
There are several important things you can do to create
an optimum operating environment for the program.
For the best possible performance try these steps:
1. Close all other applications and disconnect from the
network if you're on one, before you run these presentations.
2. Do not rename or move any of the files inside the CHAPDEMO directory.
3. If you have a burning desire to rename and/or relocate
the new CHAPDEMO directory, do so, but you must keep all
files as they were installed in the CHAPDEMO directory
together, with their original names and hierarchy.
4. You must have Quicktime for Windows version 2.0
or later installed in your system to run the program.
Our installer automatically does this for you.
IF ANY OTHER VERSION OF QUICKTIME FOR WINDOWS WAS
PREVIOUSLY INSTALLED YOU MUST REMOVE OR DISABLE IT.
Our installer tries to remove previous PATH references to
Quicktime for Windows in your autoexec.bat, but it may
not be successful if you have customized your system. To
be certain that no other versions of Quicktime for
Windows exist on your computer, you may try this search
technique to find Quicktime for Windows files:
A. In Windows, open File Manager,
select the FILE menu and choose Search...
B. In the dialog that appears, type into
the first box...
QT*.DLL and edit the second box to read C:\
(assuming "C" is the name of your hard drive).
C. Make sure search all subdirectories is checked.
D. Windows will report on the location of any
files with this name structure in the Search
Result Window.
E. Select all the files listed, then select the
FILE menu and choose delete.
F. Repeat from begining using *.QTC in the search
for dialog box.
5. Here are some other suggestions:
Check your available memory.
> In Windows PROGRAM MANGER, find the HELP menu.
Select "About Program Manager..." In the window
which appears is a number for "Memory".
Ideally, it should be at least 8,000K.
> "Virtual Memory", also called a Swap File:
From the MAIN group, select CONTROL PANELS. In
that group, select 386 ENHANCED. In that window,
click the VIRTUAL MEMORY button. Make sure that
is is set to at least the recommened value.
When Installation is complete you will find all of these files:
In C:\CHAPDEMO:
DEMO.EXE
README.TXT
In C:\Windows
MCENU.HLP
PLAYENU.DLL
PLAYENU.HLP
PLAYER.EXE
README.EXE
VIEWENU.DLL
VIEWENU.HLP
VIEWER.EXE
In C:\Windows\System
DHIO_DH.QTC
MCIQTENU.DLL
MCIQTW.DRV
NAVG.QTC
QCMC.QTC
QTCVID.QTC
QTHNDLR.DLL
QTIM.DLL
QTIMCMGR.DLL
QTIV32.QTC
QTIYVU9.QTC
QTJPEG.QTC
QTMOVIE.VBX
QTNOTIFY.EXE
QTOLE.DLL
QTPIC.VBX
QTRAW.QTC
QTRLE.QTC
QTRPZA.QTC
QTRT21.QTC
QTSMC.QTC
QTVHDW.QTC
REELMGIC.QTC
The enormous variety of possible video boards, sound boards,
and system configurations leaves open the possibility that
certain computer systems will not be fully compatible with
this program.
If you are experiencing difficulty, please review the
following suggestions.
Are you running Windows version 3.1 or higher?
Are you running under DOS 5.0 or 6.0?
When you ran the Setup routine from this CDROM, did you
accept the installation of Quicktime 2.0?
Even having said yes, there is still the possibility that
other earlier versions of Quicktime for Windows remain
active in your system, most likely from previous
installations of other games or programs. If the Quicktime
movies in these presentations are not playing, then you
may need to remove or disable these other versions of
Quicktime for Windows as described above.
Is your sound board properly installed? If you had been
hearing sound with previous applications, your
sound board probably was installed correctly. In this case,
if you hear no sound in these presentations, perhaps you
have a loose cable or your speakers are not turned on or
the sound volume on the card's output is turned down.
Be sure you have no other programs running. Here is one
way to check this: In Windows, hold down the CONTROL key
and press the ESCAPE key to display a menu of currently
running programs. You can get to each program and choose
EXIT to close them. You should only have PROGRAM MANAGER
and AMDP or PACE running. Disable your screen
saver, too, if you have one.
Is your display set to 640 x 480 pixels and 256 colors?
Other settings are possible, but this is the optimum setting.
To check your display setting, find the MAIN program group.
Double click on the WINDOWS SETUP icon. The top line in the
dialog box which appears is your Display setting.
If your Display is not set to 640x480, 256 colors, find
the OPTIONS menu in the box and select "Change System
Settings". Scroll down the Display pop-up menu and find
a line with "640x480x256". Select it and close the Setup
dialog box. Restart Windows. (If you do not find such a
line, you may need to install the appropriate display
driver. This is normally on a floppy disc which came with
your display board. Follow your manufacturer's directions,
or consult your Windows instruction book for the
procedure.)
There are a few known cases where setting your monitor to
32K, 64K, or 16M colors (if available) will produce better
performance than 256 colors.
ADDITIONAL TROUBLESHOOTING:
Due to the absence of standardization on PC compatibles,
a variety of additional concerns may be relevant to your
particular configuration. The file on this CD called
TECHHELP.TXT addresses the the most frequently encountered
issues in running Windows-based multimedia presentations
on a PC compatible.
